Reasons for Teeth Discoloration

Several factors contribute to the staining and discoloration of your teeth. Generally, there are two types of tooth stains: intrinsic and extrinsic stains.

Intrinsic Stains

Stains on the inner layer of the tooth are called intrinsic stains. Dentin, the harder inner core of a tooth, is the one generally affected by these stains.

Intrinsic stains are quite hard to remove and are commonly caused by :

  • Excessive fluoride
  • Oral injury or trauma
  • Certain medications and treatments
  • Natural erosion of enamel due to age

Extrinsic Stains

As the name suggests, extrinsic stains affect the enamel or outer layer of the teeth. Extrinsic stains are essentially only on the surface level and can be easily removed.

The main causes of extrinsic stains are:

  • Dyed foods and drinks like red wine, soft drinks, etc.
  • Chemicals in tobacco
  • Worn down enamel

Our specialists at Laveen Dental in Laveen, Arizona, will thoroughly assess your situation before recommending the most appropriate treatment.

The Teeth Whitening Procedure at Laveen Dental

For best results, we recommend in-office teeth whitening treatments as they can yield better results than at-home whitening kits.

Before the teeth whitening process begins, our specialists will determine the current shade of your teeth to use as a reference for the results of the treatment.

The first step of the teeth whitening treatment is to thoroughly clean your teeth and remove any plaque buildup. Next, your gums and lips will be covered to protect them from the bleaching solution.

The teeth are then coated with a whitening solution containing 15 to 35% hydrogen peroxide or carbide peroxide. Once the whitening solution is applied, it’s exposed to light or laser to activate the whitening molecules.

The solution stays on for up to 30 minutes and is then rinsed.

Teeth whitening treatments can be repeated until the desired results are achieved.

Aftercare for Teeth Whitening

After completing the teeth whitening treatment, patients are recommended to avoid foods and drinks containing staining pigments for at least one week.

These include red wine, mustards, tomato juice, etc. You should also avoid tobacco products.
