Experiencing a hard blow to the face during athletic activities can certainly cause significant dental trauma. In some of these situations, enough force is applied to a tooth to knock it out of the socket or cause it to fracture at the gumline. A situation of this magnitude requires quality first-aid while you seek professional attention at Dr. Abbas Nejad ’s dental office.

Understanding the extent of the oral damage can be beneficial. If you have lingering blood in your mouth you can rinse it away with lukewarm saltwater. This will help you get a clear view of traumatized tissues.

Dr. Abbas Nejad might be able to implant the tooth back into the socket.  However, the chances of this are very low. For there to have any hope of success the damage to the socket must be minimal while the tooth is whole and still alive. Milk and warm water are poor choices for preserving the tooth. The easiest option is to simply place the whole tooth between your cheek and gums.

There are also tooth-preservation products available in stores that can help. These are a canister filled with a specially formulated nourishing gel. To use it, you simply place the knocked out tooth in the jar and seal it. The nourishing gel will keep it alive long enough for Dr. Abbas Nejad to assess the situation.

If any part of the tooth remains in the socket, Dr. Abbas Nejad might recommend extracting the remnants of the tooth to allow your gums to heal.
