Do you frequently hear or see ads for dental products such as toothpaste that claim to have properties that “combat plaque”? What does this mean? What is plaque, and why is it bad for your oral health? Our dentist and team offer a review of the nature and dangers of plaque to help you protect your smile from harm.

What is plaque?
Plaque is a filmy substance that builds up on your teeth as a result of consuming food and drink, and is rich in harmful bacteria. As you eat or drink throughout the day, even with healthy choices, your foods lead to some amount of plaque appearing on your teeth. We encourage you to brush your teeth twice a day to remove plaque regularly from the surface of your teeth.

Why is plaque harmful?
Plaque acts as a breeding ground for bacteria, and if your teeth are exposed to plaque for an extended period of time, it can harden into a more harmful substance known as tartar that can only be removed by a professional dental cleaning. Tartar that isn’t removed from your teeth can lead to gingivitis and advanced gum disease over time.

We encourage you to clean your smile regularly to remove plaque from the surface of your teeth before it puts you at risk of gingivitis and other oral health problems, such as severe tooth decay.
